School catchments and a home move: checks before you rely on an address

A map pin or property description cannot guarantee a school place. Admission arrangements, address rules, applications and oversubscription criteria need checking with the responsible authority for the relevant year.

Identify the admission authority

Use the local council's school-admissions service to find the schools, application route and published admission arrangements. Some academies, faith schools and other schools may set their own criteria, so one general catchment map is not enough.

Check the policy for the intended admission year and the child's point of entry. Rules, boundaries, dates and the number of available places can change between cohorts.

Do not turn priority into a guarantee

Living in a catchment area may provide priority under a policy, but official council guidance warns that it does not necessarily guarantee a place. Oversubscription criteria and other applicants' circumstances still affect allocation.

Treat statements from a listing, seller or estate agent as a prompt to verify, not as admission evidence. Ask the admission authority how the exact address is treated and what proof of residence it requires.

Look beyond one school label

Visit schools where possible and review their current information, inspection record and published performance data in context. Ofsted's official service can locate providers by postcode or local authority, but an inspection outcome is only one part of household fit.

Consider journey time, safe travel, before- and after-school care, additional needs, sibling arrangements and realistic alternatives. A move that depends on one uncertain allocation should remain visibly conditional.

Keep a dated evidence record

Save the policy year, source link, date checked, exact address used and any written response from the admission authority. If the application or completion date moves, recheck the evidence rather than relying on an old screenshot.
